Tips For Doing Yoga On The Beach

by Philip Booth on July 19, 2011

There can be few things more relaxing for a yoga addict than doing a bit of yoga on the beach, but before you can go out there and start in with your yoga, you will need to make sure you are taking the proper steps to properly do yoga on the beach!

Clothing: A lot of people make the mistake of trying to do yoga on the beach in the same clothes they would usually wear to the beach, but rather than wearing a small bikini, you should simply wear the clothes you usually wear when performing yoga. In this way, you can make sure you are comfortable and have a full range of motion without showing off more of your body than you might have intended to.

Yoga For Anyone!

Time and location: Yoga is supposed to be a relaxing event, but if you end up in an area with a lot of kids running around or college students drinking and yelling, it will not be very relaxing at all! Choose a flat area – preferably with packed sand, such as you will find after the tide has gone out – that is far enough away from all the other action of the beach that you will be able to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Face the sun – or don’t: Although you will often hear yogis advising you to face the sun during your yoga routine – especially when you are doing yoga outside – you can certainly break this rule when you are doing your yoga on the beach! Facing the ocean while doing your yoga can provide the optimal amount of relaxation and unwinding, so if you find this to be the case for yourself, you should not worry about where the sun is so much as you should worry about enjoying the ocean!

Discover Simple Yoga Secrets!

After you have combined all these things, you can enjoy some yoga on the beach that will help you unwind and relax like nearly nothing else can!

Two great exercise videos

by Philip Booth on July 16, 2011

Going to the gym can be a real downer especially if you are out of shape and self-conscious. Most people like to be in shape before going to the gym, which is why we like exercise videos. You can get in shape at home for a fraction of the cost. If you are self-motivated, and really want to get into shape this option can really work for you. You might find that you never needed to go to the gym in the first place.

If you want a kick butt workout that will use the calories and get you toned, the good old Billy Blanks TaeBo Cardio is a great place to start. These are a great overall workout and you can take it as fast or slow as you need. The more often you work out using it the more you will fee comfortable with it. Though it might be a bit intimidating at first, you can get a real workout from it. Make sure you don’t overdue it the first time, or  you will be quite sore. Stop when you need to but make it a goal to continue building. This video can and will kick your butt and get you moving.

If you are looking for something a bit sassier you could consider the Zumba Fitness Total body Transformation System DVD. You will find yourself dancing your way to fitness. This is a lot of fun especially if you don’t mind making a fool of yourself until you get the hang of it. It won’t take long to break into a sweat from the energetic movement. Lots of people go to live zumba and have a lot of fun doing it. You can get an amazing workout and learn some great dance moves to boot.

These are only 2 of many options available, but they are worth the money. I picked out these two as my favorites because they are very intense and will get you moving and burning calories very quickly. Don’t be afraid to try something new, it is well worth your time.

Exploring The Benefits Of Green Tea

by Philip Booth on July 16, 2011

Plenty of people include coffee as part of their daily routine, and while coffee is certainly not bad for you (that is – it’s certainly not bad for you when you skip the cream and sugar!), there is still at least one option that is better than coffee, and it is green tea.

Out of all the benefits to drinking green tea, the biggest of all is that it is an antioxidant; this means that it keeps some of the bad cells in your body from getting the oxygen that causes them to make you sick – in other words, green tea (when made part of your daily routine) will effectively act as a “sickness prevention” supplement.

Green tea is also a great replacement for coffee because of the fact that it gives you energy; while you will not get nearly as much caffeine from a single cup of green tea as you would from a cup of coffee, you can either double-up on green tea (after all, there is nothing wrong with drinking it throughout the day!), or you can even use it as a way to lower your caffeine intake.

Increased relaxation is another way in which green tea helps people; in addition to the calming effects of enjoying a hot drink, green tea is not nearly as acidic or strong as coffee, which makes it a much more soothing indulgence.

Green tea also tastes great, and you can get it in a variety of inexpensive forms, and can prepare it in a variety of ways; one of the best (and most soothing) ways to prepare green tea is also one of the simplest: simply prepare water to your desired temperature, steep your tea bag in the water, then add a spoonful of honey and enjoy!

Regardless of whether you are looking for a replacement for coffee or are simply wanting to find a new treat you can add every once in a while, green tea is a great thing to try; you might even find yourself wondering why you did not make the switch to green tea sooner!

How To Prevent Ticks While Hiking

by Philip Booth on July 14, 2011

There are lots of bugs out there, and there are very few of them that many of us want crawling over our body; but out of all these bugs, ticks are definitely some of the worst! After all, ticks not only crawl on your body, but they also try to make their home on your body. And once a tick makes its home on your body – living off of your blood – it can be nearly impossible to get rid of! After all, a tick continues to damage your body even if you pull it out – and you have to burn or drown them to kill them! Because of this, your best bet is to keep ticks off your body altogether if you want to keep them from making their home on your body.

Of course, if you do not have pets, and if you are not “the outdoorsy type,” you should have no real problem staying away from ticks. But it can be far more difficult to keep ticks off you if you enjoy hiking or camping; if you want to keep ticks away, here are a few tips to remember.

Firstly, know that there are two places where you are likely to get ticks: from trees, and from tall grass. You will not exactly be able to avoid trees altogether if you are hiking or camping, but you will be able to cut in half your exposure to ticks if you avoid tall grass as best you can.

Wearing pants and long sleeves is also important, and even though you might think this will make you too hot in the summer, there are actually plenty of “performance apparel” items in which you can still stay cool. At worst, you should wear pants, as this will at least keep the lower half of your body protected.

And by using such bug sprays as Sawyer Maxi Deet Insect Repellent, you can not only keep ticks away, but can also keep away gnats, chiggers, fleas, and mosquitos.

If you spray this on your exposed skin before heading out into the great outdoors, you will be in much better shape to ward off ticks!

Of course, you should still give your body a thorough check when you get home – even if you have taken these measures; but you should be fine, as long as you have followed these tips.

Do High Fiber Diets Promote Weight Loss?

by Philip Booth on July 14, 2011

Many weight loss programs have touted the idea that a high fiber diet will result in weight loss, regardless of portion control and calorie counting. Proponents of high fiber weigh tloss programs are relying on feelings of fullness to stop you from overeating calorie-wise. It also counts on the high fiber intake countering the effects of unhealthy foods, such as high sugar foods, since some types of fiber can reduce the impact of sugar on your blood sugar level.

Fiber is good for you for several reasons. Fiber acts as a cleaning brush that goes through your intestines, scraping out excess waste and promoting better digestion and elimination. It helps you feel full. Fiber also does wonders for your blood sugar levels, especially when eaten along with high sugar foods; it helps keep your blood sugar level more stable. Fiber, when eaten with high sugar foods, will reduce your blood sugar level, meaning your body will make less insulin, and your steady blood sugar level will result in fewer cravings.

But is it enough to simply pack your diet with fiber and hope to lose weight?

It’s true that fiber will fill you up, but it will also distend your stomach, stretching it such that you will need more food to feel satisfied. This results in the proverbial “hollow leg”, or the ability to eat lots of food. Your high fiber diet won’t prevent you from eating foods that are high in calories and yet low in density such as milk shakes, creamy soups, and pudding. The conclusion is it’s not enough to simply eat a high fiber diet and hope to lose weight.

The healthy solution? Eat high-fiber foods, but don’t assume that high fiber meal will prevent you from binging on Girl Scout cookies. Count calories, exercise, and make sure you limit high sugar and high fat foods, keeping in mind that moderation and hard work is the only surefire weight loss plan.

Getting Enough Water Throughout The Day

by Philip Booth on July 14, 2011

We all know that our bodies cannot survive without water, and that water is the most important element for us to give our bodies on a regular basis, and despite this knowledge, many of us do not give our bodies nearly as much water each day as we are supposed to. You are supposed to give your body at least one gallon of water each day, which sounds like a lot (and which feels like a lot at first!), but if you come up with a system to make sure you are getting enough water, it will become much easier.

If you spend most of your day at home, a great way to make sure you get enough water is to set eight empty cups on the counter at the start of the day, and as you finish drinking a full glass from each cup, you can turn that cup over and move onto the next cup. Also, check the glasses in your house, as there is a good chance the glasses you use are 12 ounce glasses (instead of 8 ounce glasses), which means you can use six cups and actually get more than a gallon of water!

Some people also find that it is helpful to fill up a one gallon pitcher with water at the start of the day, and to make sure they fill their drinking cup only from this pitcher; this is another approach that works best for those who spend most of the day at home.

If you are away from your house for a large portion of the day, you should purchase a water bottle that holds about a half gallon of water, and to keep it with your throughout the day, making sure you go through the bottle twice before the day ends (and in fact, many people who are home during the day find this method helpful as well).

At first, it might feel like you are drinking a lot more water than you actually need, but in time you will start to feel more comfortable drinking this much water - and more importantly, your body will thank you by being healthier and by functioning more efficiently!

How To Get Your Protein

by Philip Booth on July 14, 2011

As you probably know already, protein is important for your body’s health and wellbeing; what you may not know, however, is just how easy it is to get protein into your body. After all, just because you are unable to eat meat every meal does not mean you should be unable to get protein into your body!

Once you realize the foods that have the protein you need, it becomes much easier to get the 50 grams of proten that you are supposed to have for your body.

Anyone who starts their day off with two or three eggs is already getting a large portion of the protein they need for the day. You will get about six grams of protein from a single egg, so you will only need about 32 more grams of protein in the rest of the day if you have three eggs in the morning.

Another great place to get protein is from nuts, and peanuts are the best nuts of all. The biggest reason peanuts are great for you is becasue they contain lots of protein without containing lots of other stuff that can be bad for you. Peanut butter can also be good, as one tablespoon of peanut butter contains about 7 grams of protein!

One of the healthiest foods you can eat – and one that is extremely high in protein – is fish. Another great source of protein – one that may already be a part of your daily life – is dairy products such as yogurt and milk.

Finally, drinking smoothies that have protein powder in them is the easiest way to get big chunks of protein all at once. If you add protein powder to a smoothie that includes orange juice, bananas, and strawberries, you can have a healthy treat that is great for any time of day!

Check out The Primal Blueprint – one of the best books for helping you understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle!

Remember, when you start shopping for protein-rich foods, that your food will be healthier and will be more full of protein if you buy food that is organic. The less processed your food is, the better it is for you; and of course, “better food” means better health for you!

Eating Tips For A Healthy Heart

by Philip Booth on July 14, 2011

Keeping your heart healthy is a big part of leading a healthy lifestyle, as your heart is one of the most important parts of your body. And even though one part of keeping your heart healthy is exercising regularly, another part of keeping your heart healthy is knowing the right foods for you to eat. You can ensure that your heart – and in turn, your body – remains optimally healthy once you start to incorporate these heart-healthy foods into your diet.

You can keep your heart healthy by making fish a regular part of your diet, as fish has omega-3 fatty acids that are helpful for you and also has the health benefits of other meat, without the bad fat. Fish should be a part of your day at least two times every week.

Another set of food that is good for keeping your heart healthy is fruits and vegetables, as these are high in vitamins and fiber while being low in calories. The easiest way to get your fruits and veggies regularly is to include them as part of meals, and to keep some around the house for snacks.

How To Prevent And Even Cure Heart Disease!

Just as important as the things you eat – when it comes to keeping a healthy heart – is the things that you make sure to start taking out of your diet. Two of the biggest things you can cut out to make sure your heart continues to function at an optimal level are cholesterol and unhealthy fats.

Two other things that you should try to cut from your diet as much as possible are salts and sugars. You will be much better off with sea salt than with table salt, and you will be better off with sugar that has not been processed; but your best bet of all is to cut out sugar and salt as much as possible!

Of course, keeping your heart healthy will also require you to make sure you are exercising regularly; but you will find that you have a much healthier heart once you are exercising and are adding these eating tips to your regular diet.

Shedding Your Belly Fat

by Philip Booth on July 14, 2011

There is a problem that many of us deal with, whether we want to admit it or not. We might try to hide it, or we might deny it, but we know that it is there. It can make us feel uncomfortable, self-conscious. It is belly fat, and we cannot figure out how to make it go away! You are not alone, if you find yourself in this place. In fact, belly fat is one of the most common nuisances people deal with, and this is due largely to the fact that it is difficult to know exactly how to get rid of it. If you are fighting a losing belly fat battle, here are a few things you can do to turn things around.

First off, you cannot just eat healthy – you also have to add in exercise. You have to do more than just stomach exercises, too; you have to add in aerobic workouts, ones that get your heart pumping. You can get your metabolism going by jogging, walking, bicycling, or swimming three or four days a week. This is vital if you want to shed that pesky flab.

Next, you need to work out all parts of your body – not just your stomach. It might seem absurd to believe that you can burn belly fat by doing curls or squats, but it is true! You are optimizing your body’s ability to burn fat when you work out all parts of your body. You do not have to do intense, life-changing workouts in order to work out all parts of your body. Find something you enjoy, and then stick with it!

And finally, yes, you can add in some stomach exercises to help you burn that stomach fat. Instead of just picking one stomach exercise and sticking to it, mix things up with a variety of stomach and ab exercises. As you build muscle in your abdominal area, you will also be burning fat.

You cannot win the battle against belly fat if all you do is eat healthy and do stomach workouts, even though each of these is important. Find a way that you can fit in your full-body workouts and your aerobic exercises, setting up a schedule that will allow you to do this. That belly fat will finally begin to disappear, and you will be thrilled that you made the effort!

Consider Natural Sweeteners over Refined Sugar

by Philip Booth on July 13, 2011

People may have any number of reasons to want to drop the refined white sugar from their diets. Some people want something with a lower glycemic index while others just want to get back to nature with their diet. No matter what the reason, if you have decided to drop the refined sugars you may be wondering what natural ( less processed options) you have available to you.

One great natural sweetener is blue agave.  This is the same plant that is used to make tequila When compared to sugar in sweetness, blue agave is considerably sweeter. It takes about a fourth less agave compared to sugar. This syrup can be produced organically. The agave syrups flavor is somewhat similar to honey mixed with vanilla.  The flavor is quite unique specifically to agave. It can take a little bit to get used to the flavor.

Another great natural sweetener is sweet sorghum syrup.  In parts of the country this is called molasses even though it is not actually molasses. Sorghum syrup comes from pressing the stems of sorghum plants and boiling off much of the water similar to maple syrup. It is easy to find organic sorghum syrup in health food stores.  Sorghum can be grown without herbicides and insecticides. Nutritionally sorghum is fairly high in iron. The flavor of sorghum is very similar to molasses.

Maple syrup is gathered from sugar maples during the late winter early springtime of the year. The sap is boiled down over a long period of time to create the syrup. Maple syrup contains high levels of manganese.  It also contains zinc and calcium. These are important elements for our bodies. Not only is maple syrup good on pancakes but it can also be used in baking, and sweetening drinks.

There are many other options avaliable to you also. You may also be able to find brown rice syrup, and of course there is molasses, and honey too. There are any number of natural options that will work for you.
